Engagement in higher education, particularly through foundation degrees, is becoming more widespread in a variety of employment and professional sectors. But what are foundation degrees, how do they differ from other courses, and could achieving one enhance your career in dental nursing?

Higher education (HE) is advanced level study predominantly for students above the age of 18 years. HE course are usually provided by universities or other HE institutions and the types of qualifications most commonly associated with studying at HE level are degrees. However, foundation degrees are a relatively new type of qualification.

Foundation degrees have been developed by the HE sector in partnership with employers to ensure that the skills employers need are met. They can be studied in a variety of different ways, e.g. full time, part time or through distance learning (Southampton Solent University, no date). Studying for a foundation degree generally involves studying at undergraduate (degree) level, and combining academic endeavour with work-place or work-related learning.
