Why do we need to take a medical history?

As dental care professionals, we are aware that taking a patient's medical history is of utmost importance. Indeed, it is just as vital to update the medical history. If current and accurate, it will provide a foundation to provide optimal quality dental care. Being aware of medical conditions and medications used to manage these conditions is imperative. Some medications can directly affect the oral health. Medications include prescription drugs and over-the-counter products. One must not fail to also consider vitamins, minerals and natural remedies. Further insight into a medical history may be gained by asking open-ended questions such as: ‘Besides what you have listed in your medical history, do you take any other medical or herbal supplement to manage your condition or enhance your health?’ Often the answer may be surprising – and the patient will be grateful to you.
