Is the person’s mental health status relevant to the dental nurse?

How many of your patients attending routine checkups or dental treatment have some form of mental health problem? A routine question the receptionists ask patients as they are booked in relates to their prescribed medications. Certain medications may indicate that a patient is being treated for a mental health condition but, for many of our patients, their mental health status will be unknown to the dental team. Likewise our own mental health state and that of our colleagues is often something we are reluctant to discuss, advertise or, at times, acknowledge.
