When the headlines scream ‘Dental patients at risk’

The topic of infection control has drawn a bit of a media circus of late, thanks partly to a few newsworthy breaches in dental practices and the Zika virus. Here, Rebecca Waters asks if your standards are high enough

We live in a 24-hour news culture, where stories can very quickly attract public interest and gain momentum. Global outbreaks of diseases such as bird flu, MRSA, Ebola and, most recently Zika virus, have received unprecedented levels of press coverage leading to public concern. This, in turn, has led to a significant increase in public awareness of cross-contamination risks and infection control procedures within the healthcare environment, including hospitals, dental practices and GP surgeries. Although patients may not necessarily understand or appreciate the lengths that each practice will go to in order to maintain high standards of infection control, it's important nonetheless you demonstrate a commitment to maintaining excellent hygiene standards.
