This article gives an overview of modern slavery in the UK and will show how dental registrants should react if they observe a situation that raises concerns that a vulnerable adult is subject to abuse.

To introduce information about modern slavery in the UK, outline laws introduced to safeguard slavery victims and demonstrate an approach to safeguarding vulnerable adult patients.

The term ‘vulnerable adults’ covers an extensive range of individuals, some of whom may be incapable of looking after any aspect of their lives and others who may be experiencing short periods of illness or disability with an associated reduction in their ability to make decisions.
