What are the choices?

Leanne Birkett considers dental nurses' potential career paths.

I have seen many changes in the role of a dental nurse throughout my 15-year career. Gone are the days of studying to become a qualified dental nurse with no further progression insight. Becoming a hygienist or therapist is a fantastic career choice, but isn’t always the right path for everyone.

It certainly wasn’t the right path for me, but that hasn’t stopped me from progressing and contributing more in my role within both my practice and community.

I work in a five-surgery dental practice that offers implants, oral surgery, orthodontics, endodontics, periodontics, and cosmetic dentistry. It means I have been able to train in impression taking, sedation, intra-oral scanning, implant nursing, orthodontic and oral surgery nursing and I have gained further qualifications in oral health education and lead in decontamination.
