This topic is never an easy one to write. As a clinician, I see my fair share of lovely patients who are affected by the terrible disease that is dementia. I am sure we all have patients we remember coming in with a smile and lots of chat that over the years have seen this illness impair them, and seen the terrible sadness and pain this has on their friends, families and carers. Although a difficult subject, this is not an issue we can shy away from. Just because it is difficult to write, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t.

Starting with the facts and what we know of this umbrella term, ‘dementia’. This illness is not a natural part of ageing and relates to the decline of brain functions and the sad symptoms this presents.
