Jo Bates details how a company is transforming children’s oral health, one glove at a time.

In the spring of 2013, while chatting with fellow parents at the school gates, I shared an idea that would eventually change the lives of thousands of families across the UK and beyond. The concept was simple: create a fun, positive, and gentle solution to help children stop thumb and finger sucking. That idea became Thumbsie, and 12 years later, we’re proud to continue empowering children to overcome this common childhood habit with compassion and innovation.

Thumb sucking is a natural soothing reflex for many young children. However, if the habit continues beyond early childhood, it can lead to long-term issues with dental development, speech formation, and even social confidence. Dentists frequently encounter cases where prolonged thumb or finger sucking has caused malocclusion, including open bites and crossbites, as well as damage to the roof of the mouth. The need for early intervention—done in a noninvasive and child-friendly way—has never been more pressing.
