Forensic odontology, otherwise known as forensic dentistry, is being used more and more in legal investigations that involve the identification of human remains, bite marks and age estimation. Historically, this has been undertaken by a forensically trained dentist but, in recent years, more forensic dentists have been making use of DCPs to assist. So, where do we fit in to a forensic investigation? I have been involved with odontology and, in particular, identification (ID) for more than 10 years and this article gives details of how I ended up being involved, an overview of the role, its challenges and expectations.
