The launch of Mouth Care Matters (MCM) has been a trailblazing initiative in recognising the importance of providing oral health care to people hospitalised over 24 hours. I saw the MCM initiative as an opportunity to introduce the training at the University of Northampton to nurses in the four fields of nursing – adult, child and young people, learning disabilities and mental health. I liaised with the infection control lead at Northampton General Hospital to ensure the university provided the students the same oral health care resources during their training as that used for patient care in the hospital. Providing the students with the resources they would be expected to use during their placement further enhanced the training.
