‘It wasn't my intention to work in dentistry – I was actually frightened of the dentist,’ says Barbara Simpson. But 46 years later, she is hanging up her scrubs and retiring from her dedicated, passionate role as a dental nurse.
The 62 year old proudly devoted a large chunk of her career to the Community Dental Service, supporting the most vulnerable – those with learning difficulties, autism and the elderly. And, despite the challenges, she said she would not change a thing. Unlike today, Barbara headed straight into the dental industry as a school leaver. ‘I started dental nursing just two days after leaving school in 1971 – goodness, it doesn't seem that long ago,’ she says.
