Thoughts for the season

Lisa Bainham takes a slightly more serious look at the upcoming fun and festivities

The upcoming Christmas holiday and party season is usually one of great enjoyment for most, and not just at home. Most workplaces will also embrace the seasonal cheer and celebrate with a party or other form of social event for their staff. The old adage ‘you can’t please all of the people all of the time’ was never more true than when it comes to organising a work ‘social’. However, some simple communication and forethought can ensure that things run smoothly and, for this particular evening at least, you can please all of the people.

Responsible

Practices can be legally responsible for the behaviour of staff at work-related parties or events, including what is said – even if it is overheard by someone to whom the comment wasn’t addressed. You don’t have to look far in the press to see horror stories of work events that have got out of hand, drink has flowed and a comment that was made in jest or as ‘banter’ has had more serious repercussions. In preparation for the event, it may be advisable to issue a memo to attendees ahead of time simply outlining basic expectations. Remind the team they are all ambassadors for the practice and therefore are expected to adhere to certain standard of conduct. It needn’t be overly officious or make the staff feel they are on a primary school outing, just some simple guidelines for attendees to keep in mind. This isn’t said to stifle the party atmosphere, just to ensure staff are aware of their responsibilities for their own behaviour and understand how it may impact their colleagues and their employers; a little common sense can go a long way.
