The significance of teamwork during a medical emergency

Teamwork is essential when dealing with a medical emergency. A dental nurse needs to understand not only her role, but also the role of others in the dental practice. It is essential that a dental nurse is prepared and trained in identifying and treating medical emergencies, says Trudie Dawson

Dental nurses need to be prepared for when a patient suffers a medical emergency, such as a suspected heart attack.

It is the dental nurse's responsibility to inform the paramedics about the patient's condition, and any signs or symptoms such as breathlessness or drowsiness

As dental professionals we should be aware of the General Dental Council's (GDC, 2005) guidance, Standards for Dental Professionals, which has been subdivided into sections.

The document states that one of the core principles of being a dental professional is ‘putting patients first and acting to protect them’ (GDC, 2005). During a medical emergency this principle could not be more paramount.
