The role of the dental nurse in raising concerns

The primary duty of all registered dental professionals is the welfare and safety of patients.

While dental nurses have always been aware of that duty, both individually and as members of the treating team, it now forms part of their ethical and legal responsibilities following dental care professional (DCP) registration in August 2008. The General Dental Council (GDC, 2005) in its guidance states:

‘Put patients’ interests before your own and those of any organisation or business.’

That guidance is quite clear and relates to all of the professional duties and roles of the dental nurse. But what do you need to do if you have concerns about patient safety?
