Dental nurse Leanne Birkett reveals how she blossomed as an oral health educator while off work to have her baby

Why dentistry?

I ‘fell into’ dental nursing. I was working in a job that I wasn’t enjoying and I wanted something more challenging and enjoyable, so I applied for the dental nurse job at Ghyllmount Dental Practice in Penrith, which I didn’t know much about – and 12 years and two children, later I’m still here and still enjoying it.

What are your duties at work?

Nursing in general dentistry, implants, oral surgery, root canal treatment and sedation, stock ordering, administration, reception duties and oral hygiene education.

What expanded duties do you have?

I have extra certificates in impression taking and sedation nursing.

What character traits do you think you need as a dental nurse?
