Recently, the European Union (EU) agreed a €6 million research project to investigate how best to bring about a shift in dental care policy across their member states. The programme is called ADVOCATE; Added Value for Oral Care and is intended to last four years. In many EU countries, the ‘drill and fill’ mentality still lives on, but there is consensus that this needs to change – with a focus on preventive care and improved oral health. The objective is to reduce the numbers suffering with dental disease that can, in the majority of cases, be prevented. This should, therefore, reduce overall expenditure on dental treatment, recently reported at €79 billion.1
