Your ability to raise the bar illustrates dedication to professional development and a desire for a long career in dentistry – and we're here to help you achieve both

Welcome to the May issue of Dental Nursing. You may have noticed the change in strapline under the journal's title on the front cover. It now reads – ‘The journal for a career in dental nursing’ – and may seem an obvious statement, considering our readership, but it is an important one nonetheless. It differentiates between the view that the role of a dental nurse is ‘just a job’ and the more enlightened opinion that it is a long-term, professional career in dentistry.

Whatever pathway you choose, continuing professional development (CPD) plays an important role in developing a career, ensuring skills are kept up to date and knowledge current. The primary qualification as a dental nurse is only the first step on the ladder and, throughout your professional journey, this needs to be built upon with a continued commitment to education. Of course, CPD also happens to be a key factor in maintaining a dental professional's registration with the GDC, there to ensure patient safety and protection. But, just as important is your own enjoyment of the role of a dental nurse – and pride in the profession you chose. Raising the bar increases self worth and ensures patients receive the best treatments. We all strive to be the best versions of ourselves, after all.
