The General Dental Council fitness to practise panel

9 mins read GDC
Maggie Nash joined the General Dental Council's fitness to practise panel early last year. She describes the role of the panel, the process of being appointed, panel members' training and her experience of taking part in hearings

I was appointed to the General Dental Council's (GDC) fitness to practise panel (FtPP) in January 2011. This article gives an outline of what the FtPP is, what it does and the responsibilities of panel members. I shall also describe the journey from application and training through to taking part in hearings, and my reflections on being part of the FtPP.

The GDC will be recruiting more FtPP members later this year, and I hope that, after reading this article, more of my fellow dental nurses will apply.

Under the Dentists Act 1984 (amended 2005), the GDC has to promote the highest of professional standards in registrants, with the paramount aim of protecting the public.
