The essential skill of sedation

4 mins read Local anaesthesia and sedation
Susie Verow on how she is supporting phobic patients

Sedation is an essential skill to learn, especially when you are assisting dentists with nervous patients. It is important to learn the background and processes of conscious sedation and have understanding of the drugs involved. During training, I gained more experience in medical emergency training and management, which has enhanced my skills and confidence in dealing with potential medical emergencies.

The sedation course has expanded my skillset and given me another direction to aim for within dentistry. It is always good to enhance your scope of practice, and to have more involvement in patient care.

The team at my practice have been very supportive and understanding towards my training. The only setback I have found was the lack of capacity to meet my case study numbers. Because of this, I attended other clinics around the county with the help of the community dental services to find case studies. They were a brilliant team and I gained a great deal of support and additional knowledge from my sessions with them. My clinical lead was very understanding and proactive in finding these clinics, allowing me time away from practice to undertake these additional cases.
