The dental nurse's role during implant procedures

6 mins read Aesthetic dentistry
Dental nurses have a central role in implant placement, from explaining the stages of the process to patients and addressing patient concerns to assisting during the procedure itself and providing postoperative care and advice to maximise success rates

‘We could place an implant here.’ As a trainee dental nurse watching a pointer being run over a radiograph and hearing terms I did not understand, I knew this involved a considerable procedure, for not only the patient but also the clinician I was listening to. Very careful planning was involved, along with measuring bone levels and taking clinical photographs and discussions of bone augmentation, possibly using bone removed surgically from another part of the patient's body.

The patient and myself were in a daze. Questions arising included: what will the surgery involve? Bone? Extra bone? Will I been awake for this? Will I need time off work? What is the cost?
