Shadae Atkinson outlines the demands and challenges in the life of a dental nurse.

Dental nursing can be a rewarding career, however, I think we can all agree it can also be quite demanding at times. The role requires you to exercise fast-paced decision-making and the ability to cope under pressure in a variety of situations. Multitasking is also a vital skill to acquire as a dental nurse, as you will be carrying out cross-infection control and decontamination of instruments between patients on a regular basis.

It cannot be denied that dental nurses play an integral role in the provision of dental care, and over the years of working as a dental nurse, it can become challenging if there is a gradual build-up of long hours, demanding patients and further education commitments outside of your day to day work. If one includes the elements of having a family and wanting to maintain some form of social life, it can become increasingly stressful attempting to carve out the time to address all these ongoing demands.
