Reflective practice is the cornerstone of dental professional development. Simply put, it involves looking back, analysing your current knowledge foundation, taking on new learning whilst constructively evaluating for the future and implementing your new knowledge into practice.
It is paramount to remember that each person’s learning is unique. Each individual will have their own current knowledge base and experiences to draw upon. Each dental nurse will need to understand what they currently know. In doing this identify what you require further professional development in or areas where you would like to expand your knowledge. Next you will need to research where you will acquire the new information and/or skillset. Once you have acquired this new knowledge, you must critically analyse if this has met your current requirements, or if you require further information in the area.
