Former dental nurse Anne-Marie Thompson shares a career move that took her from lead dental nurse to semi-permanent make-up artist

I started as a trainee dental nurse at age 16 in 2000, with just my GCSEs. Back then we could work without enrolling on a course and eventually I qualified in 2004.

I worked in various dental practices over my 18 years in the dental field – from south east London and Kent to Harley Street and Marylebone. I assisted newly qualified dentist and long-standing and highly qualified professors, working from general dental nursing duties, including reception/admin, to specialising over the years in endodontics, orthodontics, periodontics, extensive invasive surgery and implants, including the use of sedation. Eventually, I was working as a lead dental nurse with additional managerial duties, assisting the managers with CQC requirements and legislation, implementing changes and improvements to the practice where necessary.
