Technology for patient education and practice management

Digital media – websites, DVDs and social media – can be used to improve communication with patients, and support education, monitoring and preventive measures. Technology can also help in practices in other ways, such as recording keeping

Technology has pervaded the world of dentistry and the sooner we embrace it the better we can serve our patients. A proper understanding and use of digital media can assist practices in establishing connections with patients and to support educational, monitoring and preventive measures that contribute to their overall wellbeing. Technology has been used to great effect for administration but dental teams may not be making the most of it for other purposes.

In this litigious society, it is essential to keep full, accurate and contemporaneous patient records—this is also a General Dental Council requirement (GDC, 2013). Technology has simplified record-keeping and improved clinical note-taking, since digitally recorded notes are much clearer and confusion resulting from illegible handwriting is eliminated.
