This series of articles is designed to help you explore teaching and learning. It examines your own personal learning and explores how you as a dental nurse may be called upon to teach others. The third article in this series discusses patient education

Patient education is an important part of any nurse's responsibilities, particularly dental nurses. Consider how much dental disease can be prevented with good simple oral hygiene and sensible eating habits. In addition, any patient undergoing a series of treatments will need advice and education regarding oral care while the treatment is ongoing.

Consider your role as the dental nurse. Think about where and how you can influence someone's dental health? Examine the list below and tick any of the areas that you might potentially have some input into relating to dental health education:

? Yourself

? Your own children

? Your relatives

? Your friends
