Claire Frisby reflects on her career.

This is a career timeline I can safely say I never expected to take! I first started as a trainee dental nurse back in 1992, and quickly moved out of an NHS practice (I already knew that I wanted to progress and there was no potential for that in this specific place) and into the world of private practice instead. I felt like I had started completely from scratch and did not know anything, with my confidence taking an unexpected downward turn.

In this practice, however, there was a very nurturing culture and to my surprise, they supported me and helped me progress in all the areas I needed help and guidance in. After some time, I started working with the implant surgeon and the periodontist there to gain experience. With patience and the support of other members of staff and my own determination, I proudly gained my oral health and radiography certificates. They gave me my own patients to see for full mouth X-rays and oral health education which I loved giving, and during which I learned the importance of strong patient communication. We also had a mini molar plan – this was when the dentist would see the children for their check-ups, and then I would give them clear and easy-to-understand oral health advice. It was in this encouraging and harmonious environment that I went on to become a practice manager.
