Sugar-free gum and dental caries: a high-impact approach

Dental caries remain a major public health problem. However, research has demonstrated that minimal intervention and management approaches can make a dramatic impact in preventing dental caries. Among the most impactful tools in this new approach is sugar-free chewing gum

Untreated caries in permanent teeth were the most prevalent condition evaluated for the entire Global Burden of Disease 2010 Study, with a global prevalence of 35% for all ages combined (Marcenes et al, 2013). From a regional perspective, dental caries affect 60–90% of schoolchildren and the vast majority of adults in industrialised countries. Caries are also one of the most prevalent oral diseases in Latin American and Asian countries (Pederson, 2003). In Africa, where the burden of dental carries has traditionally been lower in comparison to other regions, the growing consumption of sugars and inadequate access to fluoride is set to increase incidence rates across the continent (Pederson, 2003).
