At this year’s British Orthodontic Conference, the Orthodontic National Group ran a full-day programme for orthodontic dental nurses.
Sheena Kotecha, consultant at Birmingham Dental Hospital and University Hospitals North Midlands, kicked off the sessions with a lecture entitled Orthodontics: It’s only straight teeth that considered the importance of teeth and the relationship between quality of life and orthodontics.
The evidence-based presentation examined data from the national bullying surveys and patient-reported outcome measures (PROM), which supports the value of orthodontics. Teeth, she said, remain the number one target of bullying and the effects are far reaching, influencing truancy, running away from home, eating disorders, depression and self-harm. With PROM data suggesting patients are 100% happy with the treatment outcome, Sheena said it was encouraging to know that orthodontics really does make a difference, and that teams should develop and grow services accordingly.
