Only a relatively short time ago, communication shared with family, friends and colleagues, as well as strangers, was limited. Most of what was said or written stayed within an immediate circle. The information that was sent or received had a limited shelf life. Telephone calls could be forgotten, letters or memos destroyed or lost.
Today's world is very different. While discussions and written material may include the same information, opinions and images, electronic and social media now make it possible for these to be disseminated, anywhere in the world at any time, often instantaneously.
Social media includes internet forums, blogs (formerly known as web logs), social blogs, social networks, podcasts, texts and emails.
