Ellen Cummings talks to Anshu Sood about the campaign for safer dentistry

Orthodontics is an area that has seen quite a big increase in patient interest in the last few years – why do you think that is?

I suppose society generally has changed its perception of the value of your identity, of the way that you look, and I think we’re also driven by social media and reality TV. We call ourselves an Instagram generation, don’t we? And I think that pressure of looking a certain way, but also the appeal of looking that way, has certainly changed people’s perception to wanting to have their teeth straightened. As that has improved, I suppose the taboo around wearing braces has reduced, and so more and more people are willing to seek treatment.
