
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern. Sometimes known as winter depression, symptoms are usually more pronounced in winter. It is recognised as a mental health disorder. It affects two million people in the UK and over 12 million across Northern Europe alone.
Although SAD and its causes are not fully understood, it is often linked to low exposure to sunlight during autumn and winter days, hence the name winter depression.
