Roadmap back to better oral health

Practice manager Kim Payne shares her experience of getting children back on track

Reopening post lockdown has been hard for many businesses and remains so for those not fortunate enough to be able to get back to any sort of normality. Working in private dentistry has allowed us to continue to treat our patients, albeit within the new boundaries that COVID-19 has created. One sector that has been hit very hard is education. It has been a mammoth task for everyone involved – the children being home schooled, the parents having to be teachers and the teachers having to both teach in class for key worker children and provide content for those who remained at home. The workload is heavy, but the effect on the mental health of our young generation is also a concern. Not seeing their friends and schoolmates is hard, not to mention the confusion of what we are and are not allowed to do – and why. Meanwhile, many of these children haven’t seen a dentist in more than a year, as many NHS practices continue to struggle to provide ‘routine’ care.
