Risk assessments in dentistry

5 mins read Risk management
As part of the Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, all employers are required to assess the risks to those in the workplace and any others who may be affected.

As part of managing the health and safety of a business, risks in the workplace must be controlled. To do this you need to think about what might cause harm to people and decide whether you are taking reasonable steps to prevent that harm. This is known as risk assessment and it is something you are required by law to carry out. A risk assessment is nothing more than a careful examination of what, in your workplace could cause adverse effect resulting in harm to people. This allows you to weigh up whether you have taken enough precautions or should do more. It may be helpful to walk around your practice accompanied by a member of staff with the specific intention of taking note of anything that could cause a problem.
