6 mins read Opinions
In April 2014, a symposium took place to obtain possible strategies for improving the oral health of the nation (England). This article will recap some of the key issues debated, discussing the findings from the event and their relevance to dental nurses

A major event in the dental calendar took place in April 2014. The symposium was entitled ‘Improving Dental Care and Oral Health – A Call To Action’. Around 210 delegates attended the event—a mix of patient representatives, dental professionals, commissioners and individuals from national bodies. Its purpose was to focus national stakeholders in dentistry on possible strategies for improving the oral health of the nation (England).

The published report numbers some 52 pages (NHS England, 2014). It is not possible to summarise the document in full in this article, just three of the themes are discussed here. The author recommends that readers of Dental Nursing initiate their own ‘call to action’ and access the whole report, taking note of the final discussion that covers the issues around the data gathered in detail, and consider what significance these issue have to their role as a dental nurse.
