Relaxation techniques in the management of dental anxiety

8 mins read Dental phobia/anxiety
Dental anxiety is a common problem and is associated with reduced quality of life and poorer oral health. In this article, Sharon Bennett describes the introduction of relaxation techniques at her practice as a tool for managing dental anxiety

Dental anxiety is experienced by a high proportion of the population. Figures from the UK 1998 Adult Dental Health Survey suggest that 49% of the population who have their own natural teeth are anxious about visiting the dentist (Office for National Statistics, 1998). However, for some this anxiety is overwhelming and prevents them obtaining the dental treatment they need. Dental anxiety has a profound effect on activities of daily living, affecting general health, self-esteem and personal relationships (Cohen et al, 2000), and is associated with reduced quality of life and poorer oral health (Vermaire et al, 2008).

In an effort to improve the management of patients with dental anxiety, Warwickshire Special Care Dental Service (WSCDS) implemented an anxiety management service (AMS) using relaxation techniques for patients who are unable to tolerate treatment at a general dental practitioner.
