Reducing the impact of ageing on dental health

Older people are more likely than previous generations to have their natural teeth and are less willing to accept dentures. Dental care professionals need to consider a number of factors that affect the dental health of older people, and employ preventive measures

Population ageing is a progressive trend in most developed nations. In almost every country, the proportion of people aged over 60 years is growing faster than any other age group as a result of both longer life expectancy and declining fertility rates. In the UK, by 2033, 23% of the population will be aged 65 and over compared to 18% aged 16 or younger (Office for National Statistics, 2010). This population ageing can be seen as a success story for public health policies and for socioeconomic development, but it also challenges society to adapt to maximise the quality of life for these older people.
