Diane Rochford considers how we can help our local communities

As the Covid-19 pandemic has proven, health inequalities are still rife in society, even in developed countries such as the UK. World Health Day is next month, and this year’s message is focused around giving everyone access to the care they need without bringing with it the burden of financial hardship. As dental services continue to remain unaffordable for some, even via NHS channels, perhaps this is a good opportunity for us to reach out to the most vulnerable in our local communities and see if we can help.

Help those in need!

If this is an idea you want to pursue, it’s a smart idea to talk to the team at your practice and decide what demographic you want to reach out to. For instance, if the city you live in has a high proportion of homelessness, hosting an open evening for these individuals would be a good way to give this segment of society access to much-needed advice and care. Another option could be hosting a special open morning for the elderly or for young children – it’s all about looking at the groups of people who may not traditionally have the means or opportunity to be able to access care normally and giving them tailored attention.
