Dental radiography can be considered one of the most important diagnostic aids in dentistry. The Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999 (IRR99) are enforced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and are primarily concerned with:
? Radiographic equipment
? Employees
? Patients and the public
The Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000 (IR(ME)R 2000) are governed by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and are primarily concerned with patients. The Approved Code Of Practice and Guidance L121 gives detailed advice on IRR99 (HSE, 2000). It is aimed at employers with duties under the regulations. It also provides guidance notes on the safe use of X-ray equipment.
