Putting a child's needs first

Maintaining a child focus when a safeguarding incident arises is often a challenge, even for individuals who are fully aware of their professional duty

It can be disturbing and upsetting to hear a disclosure from a child, but a good safeguarding training course will support you and the rest of the staff in your dental practice to handle such a situation appropriately. In our dental-specific Further Adult/Child Protection online training course, we detail a case study wherein Davina, a 16-year-old Jamaican girl, demonstrates signs of past abuse while on work experience at a dental practice.

Davina came to England at the age of eight to live with her grandmother after her mum died in a road accident. Sadly, her grandmother passed away a year later, so Davina was moved into foster care. While on work experience at the practice, Davina talks to Frank, a dental nurse, about her experiences in foster care. She refers to a family she stayed with when she was nine and how she really liked them, but did not like their teenage son. Here, Davina falls silent and stops talking.
