Dental handpieces contain numerous precision components, many of which operate at very high speeds. Here are a few things to consider when caring for your handpieces to maximise their value and protect the investment made by the dental practice.
As with any high precision instrument, regular and correct cleaning, oiling and general maintenance is crucial. Handpieces are exposed to an array of different stressors, including extreme temperature variation, forces, pressures, chemical solutions and mechanical and clinical debris. Caring and maintaining handpieces, according to the manufacturers' guidelines, ensures the optimum efficiency, performance and life span of the product, as well as forming part of the infection control regime and reducing the risk of injury to the patient. Handpiece longevity and performance is not only a question of product quality, but also of regular, thorough maintenance.
