Professional indemnity: are you really protected?

5 mins read Indemnity and registration
Bill Lumley explains what you need to be aware of

Professional indemnity (PI) is a mandatory form of insurance cover that protects you as a dental nurse against dental malpractice, paying any damages awarded to a patient if they successfully sue you.

For any registered dental nurse in the UK, adequate PI cover is a legal requirement under the Dentists Act (Amendment) Order 2005. General Dental Council standard 1.8 states, “You must have appropriate arrangements in place for patients to seek compensation if they have suffered harm.” Generally, this is interpreted as dental or medical malpractice insurance or PI insurance.

Due diligence

PI cover protects you from financial or personal loss, and without it you could end up liable to pay compensation, as well as any legal costs.
