Professional indemnity and advice services

6 mins read Indemnity and registration
Dental nurses need to hold professional indemnity to be able to practise in the UK. It is offered by employers and by dental defence organisations; the latter also provide legal advice and assistance on professional and workplace issues

Dental nurses are required to hold adequate dental indemnity to be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC).

The issue of dental indemnity can appear confusing to many dental professionals. The complex terminology and reams of information available about different types of indemnity can make it complicated to understand. Understanding dental indemnity, its benefits and how it applies to your job can make it much more straightforward.

The GDC requires all registrants to have indemnity. This means that if a patient is negligently harmed while undergoing dental proceedings, the indemnity will cover compensation.

Although an employer may provide a dental professional with indemnity as part of their benefits of employment, it is the individual dental professional who is responsible for making sure that they have adequate indemnity in place before they practise.
