Pregnant during lockdown

Hulya Colak works in an NHS practice in Thanet in Kent. Here, she talks to Eloise Meldrum about her ‘lockdown’ pregnancy and how it might affect her role as a dental nurse

Just a week into lockdown and I found out I was pregnant. There were mixed emotions, as you can imagine – I felt quite afraid. The pregnancy was unexpected and the first thought that overwhelmed me was whether I’d be a good parent or not – and how I would cope. Luckily, my husband is the most supportive and encouraging person, so all of these fears very quickly drifted away and the excitement started kicking in.

I wanted to tell my practice manager once I had my three-month scan, as this is the riskiest part of pregnancy. I first made a phone call and told her on the phone and then sent an email to make sure this was on record.
