Pregnancy – a happy but hormonal time!

The joy of impending parenthood is as all consuming as the endless preparation for the event. Putting aside the great excitement, the ensuing sleepless nights and the tantrums a few years down the line, this is a time that is very special for parents and families. Perhaps the last thing the mum-to-be will be considering is the effects this pregnancy might have on herself – especially on her oral health.

Pregnancy gingivitis

It is not our intention to dampen any excitement – or to create any worry but, as clinicians, we will often see oral changes at this time. The hormonal changes that are occurring can lead to redder, bleeding or maybe even sore gums. This is known as pregnancy gingivitis. If your patient is a sufferer, then there are sources of information available – both Colgate and Oral-B have information on this condition that may help your patients.
