Postoperative care after dental implant placement

5 mins read Aesthetic dentistry
Patients are often concerned about pain, bleeding and swelling after an implant has been fitted. Verbal and written instructions can help patients to minimise discomfort and problems after surgery and know now to identify an emergency

As a dental implant nurse, I need to understand the postoperative instructions that are provided to patients following implant surgery.

At our practice, the dental implant surgeon provides the postoperative care instructions, verbally and written (Figure 2).

However, I always talk to patients before the surgery about postoperative care, so they are comfortable with the instructions and feel relaxed about asking any questions before undergoing the procedure. In addition, the day after surgery, I give patients a courtesy phone call to answer any questions they may have.

If patients are to undergo sedation, we seek their consent before the procedure to discuss the aftercare with any accompanying adult as well as with them, as sedation may cause memory loss.
