Natalie Bates worked in the travel industry for six years. Now, she is sharing her journey from trainee to qualified dental nurse on Instagram. Here, she reveals why she changed her career destination

Trainee dental nurse Natalie Bates works at a new ‘squat’ practice in Walsall, West Midlands, called Renew Dental Clinic. It opened its doors at the same time as lockdown, which she says has been a ‘great shame to start somewhere with so much potential and then to be held back’. But, in the meantime, she has enjoyed helping principal dentist Dr Indy Johal prepare her practice to open. Natalie says: ‘I feel like an invaluable member of the team already and, as a student and new starter that’s a wonderful feeling.

I grew up with a keen interest in medicine and the healthcare industry. I think this was due to my parents who are a doctor and a nurse. I sadly didn’t get good grades at school, and, when it came to sixth form I studied travel (mostly so I could stay with my friendship group). I left school and worked in travel for six years. I spent time abroad and working in sales in a travel agency. I loved my job for the memories and different cultures I experienced. But dentistry was always in the back of mind. It appealed to me because it is a patient-facing role and I enjoy interacting on a very personal basis. The role of the dental nurse is the right choice for me because it involves helping someone during their time of need. With my past experience from travel, I am able to put a different spin on their journey. There are also great routes of progression after qualifying.
