Plastic pollution is a growing issue. It is believed that up to 12 million tonnes of plastic waste ends up in our oceans each year (Friends of the Earth, ND), and a recent study, carried out by the World Economic Forum and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, has estimated that by 2050 plastic will outnumber fish (D’Angelo, 2016).
What is plastic pollution?
Simply put, it is an accumulation of plastic in a single area that has a negative effect on the environment. Our on-the-go lifestyle has seen a spike in plastic waste – with carrier bags, disposable coffee cups and bottled water easily accessible and convenient to use. Some suggest that this disposable way of life is having not only a negative effect on the environment, but on our health also (Conserve Energy Future, ND).
