Pinning support on you

Dr Nigel Carter OBE, Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, explains how a badge can make a difference in support of Mouth Cancer Action Month in November

Cancer. It's a taboo word. Health professionals don't use it unless it's absolutely necessary. Patients don't like talking about it either, so you need something to break that stigma.

During Mouth Cancer Action Month (1—30 November), campaign organisers the British Dental Health Foundation urge all dental nurses to wear a blue ribbon badge and start a conversation.

Dental nurses are in a great position to educate patients in the practice. Patients often see dental nurses as more approachable and relaxed than the principal dentist, so you are in the perfect place to engage in discussion. Ascertaining information about a patient's lifestyle will give you a better idea of their risk. These questions can be part of the regular, medical history form.
