Peri-implantitis: what you need to know and how to help

This article will introduce a significant biological complication that has developed involving dental implants: peri-implantitis. It provides an overview, how it is caused, and what dental nurses can do to help patients prevent the condition

Dental implants are one recognised method of replacing missing teeth. They were developed over a 30-year period by Professor Branemark. A biological process known as osseointegration results in anchorage of the implant within the bone. This process involves the direct laying down of bone onto the implant surface, resulting in a rigid connection. Dental implants can be used to retain fixed or removable prostheses.

The global dental implant market was worth an estimated US$6.4 billion in 2013 and is expected to be worth US$9.1 billion by 2018 (Dental Tribune International, 2014). As such, it is very likely that more and more implants will be placed, with some unfortunate associated problems.
