Now that the role of decontamination ‘lead’ is established in dental practices, it is important that those charged with this responsibility develop a broad understanding of how they can make the role contribute to patient safety. They will need a range of management skills to operate effectively in this role as set out in the Health Technical Memorandum (HTM) 01-05, which says ‘It is a requirement that an individual is given the responsibility for infection control and decontamination. This person should have the experience and authority to perform this task and should be accountable to the Registered Manager’ (Department of Health, 2013).
